Four hundred and sixty two years ago, Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor) was born of the majestic land known as Hindustan, India. According to ancient Hindu history, this Mughal Emperor sprinkled the dust of the Hindustan motherland with his very own blood. Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar was deeply in love with his kingdom. His son, the dashing war hero Nuruddin Mohammad Salim (Dilip Kumar), fell madly in love with a frightened, shy palace maid named Anarkali (Madhubala). In this film's tussle, the destiny of Hindustan trembled and the future of the country was imperiled. On one side was an emperor's responsibility towards an ever-growing empire, his dreams of the Great Hindustan and his political compulsions. On the other side were perfumed silken tresses kissing the broad shoulders of a prince in love. The iron-clad 'laws of the state" are fiercely compromised by the whims of love, madness and romance in this story. And, the love of a father is forsaken by the disobedience of his royal son.
